Wireless Network

Accessing the Wireless Network

Setting up your notebook or PDA for wireless is not as hard or expensive as you might think. Here's the information you need to get started.

What does it cost?

There is no charge to use the University of Guelph-Humber wireless network. Users will need to purchase their own wireless network card, which typically costs $150 or less. In many cases laptops come equipped with internal wireless network cards. In this case users do not need to acquire cards.

What do you need?

Wireless network card: Any 802.11b Wi-Fi certified wireless network card should work on the network. Although we do not provide hardware/installation assistance, we will provide instructions on how to configure native Windows 2000/XP network settings; these settings should work for most wireless network cards. If you are purchasing a new wireless network card, GH IT suggests the following:

  • Purchase a card that supports the 802.1x/WPA security standard or one that can be upgraded to support this feature. Although we are not currently using 802.1x/WPA, we may begin using it once it becomes more widely available.
  • Purchase a native 802.11b wireless network card.
  • Purchase a wireless network card that has a minimum RF transmitter power rating of 30mW (0.03 watts). GH IT recommends cards with a minimum rating of 60mW (.06 watts).

Central login and password: The login and password is your central login and password that is available to all students, faculty, and staff.

An SSL capable browser: A browser which supports SSL/HTTPS is required to encrypt your credentials when logging on to the wireless network.

How do I connect ?

Install your wireless network card by following the manufacturer's instructions. Use the following configuration settings to setup your wireless card for the University of Guelph-Humber wireless network. Although it is sometimes possible to leave network names blank or set to ANY to connect to any network, we highly recommend that you create a profile for campus with the specific settings described below:

  • SSID : UGH-wifi
  • WEP : disabled
  • TCP/IP : DHCP (automatic)
  • DNS : DHCP (automatic)
  • Datarate : auto (automatic)
